Benji grew up in a normal, loving family environment. Adopted by David and Eileen the day he was born, and raised as their own. He was always a very sweet boy. Somewhat awkward, a little unsocial with strangers, but would open up the moment he realized someone was good. He always had a good sense of who was good and bad, and in his experience he hasn’t met many bad people. That does not mean he trusts them all at first sight.
He always did well growing up in whatever he did though, always trying to be the best he could be. He grew up knowing who his biological father was and that scared him. Mutants terrified him because he didn’t want to be one of them. So he tried hard to establish himself even as a young boy, so if he did ever develop powers than maybe people wouldn’t be afraid of him. But by the time he turned 14, his greatest fear came to life.
He doesn’t remember much of what happened, but what he does know is that someone drugged him right as he was leaving school and kidnapped him. He remembers waking up in a basement with lights shining in his eyes. He remembers men in lab coats speaking words he didn’t quite understand. He remembers falling back asleep and then a sharp pain in his head, and when he opened his eyes again, a burst of red energy escaped from his eyes, tore through the ceiling and one of the walls. He remembers how badly it hurt and how loud everything got before being knocked out again. He didn’t know what they did, but whatever it was, they had gotten into his head and unlocked the potential he had for a mutant ability, making him just like his dad.
The next time he woke up, he was at the X-Mansion where he officially met his biological father and the rest of the X-Men. However, his eyes were wrapped in bandages, because they couldn’t risk him damaging anything further. He was absolutely terrified, both of what had happened to him, and of himself. They assured him everything would be okay, but despite his pleas, they said that they weren’t able to fix him because they didn’t know how. It took about a week for Scott to have a new pair of glasses fit to Benji, where they tested them out in the garden to find that they did indeed work.
Though angry and sad about the new life he would have to live, Benji was prepared to take on the challenge and learn to control himself so he might be able to lead somewhat of a normal life. But that normal life was hard to come by. His parents had enrolled him officially into the school despite wanting him to come home. Benji took it as they didn’t want to see him so he shut himself off from his parents, and his 6 siblings (soon to be 7 siblings, though his parents never told him about Jacob being taken into the family.) It was a lonely experience, but he had Scott to teach him how to function. How to get used to seeing the word through red-colored lenses - though Benji didn’t mind that as much considering he had always been colorblind. It took him a while to get used to it, and to get used to always needing to wear the glasses so he would not risk endangering anyone. They tried to teach him to fight, but learned he was not any good at it, and it was a bit risky all things considered. So instead they took advantage of his smarts. He was clever, and good at information, so he became their knowledge center. He was the one they went to when they needed to figure something out, and he always had an answer for them. It was a good way to make him feel needed on the team.
Benji has been living at the X-Mansion ever since, finishing his schooling there, and staying as help once he graduated - even helping teach other students in simpler classes like English or Mathematics. Now at 20, he’s gained SHIELD’s attention. It didn’t take long for them to review his file and for them to offer him a job doing exactly what he does for the X-Men. He declined at first, but after some persuasion from those he was close to, he agreed and moved. It was a scary transition for him. He’d been living at the mansion for the past 6 years, and now he was in a new place altogether. It was worse when he got there and had to listen to people talking about him like he was a threat and someone to be looked after. It got even worse too, after an accident on his first day caused him to absolutely demolish the facilities kitchen, hurting himself in the process.
He hasn’t had such a good start at SHIELD, but he plans to get it more together once he really gets settled in and gets back on his feet. His plans are to start fresh. To actually make real friends and to finally reach out to his family through more than just phone calls and letters, the way he started communicating with them a few years ago. Because he hasn’t had a family in 6 years, he misses his own family more than anything else, and it is his goal to finally swallow his own pride and go back home.
Benji possesses the same powers and abilities as his father, able to create bright bursts of red destructive beams from his eyes, and is unable to control it without his own specially made pair of ruby-quartz glasses (A gift from his father)
Benjamin is also incredibly smart to an almost superhuman level. He learns things faster than most and can read incredibly fast.
He also can play the violin, which is much less impressive than the first two skills, so it’s not really something he tells people. It’s a passive hobby and not really something he feels people need to know. But he can still do it… So that’s cool.
