Xander’s life has always been… complicated. He grew up being raised by the Guardians of the Galaxy. He’d been told that he didn’t have a mother; that she died in childbirth, though he always doubted that but had no way to prove otherwise. So instead his family was Peter and the rest of the Guardians. Though Peter was the only one that seemed to like him at first, the others eventually got used to him and treated him like their own.
Raising a baby on a spaceship had it’s obvious difficulties and it’s a miracle that Xander came out of it alive, and he owes it to mostly Gamora that he made it through his first few years because she kept him from getting absolutely trampled or killed somehow.
And the others did their share in bringing him up. Groot made little playpens for him to stay in during missions, and made dancing lights and flowers to calm him when he was sad. Drax ignored him but threatened to destroy anything that scared the boy. Rocket showed him how guns and weapons worked from the time he was one (though Peter was the one who made sure Rocket didn’t let him blow his head off.) But Peter was the best one. He loved his son more than he could ever put into words. He did his best for him, trying to give him everything - showing him his music, bringing him toys, playing with him, caring for him as much as he knew how. And Xander completely adored him from day one, his dad was his hero.

Despite the difficulties, they made it through the first few years of Xander’s life without killing him. By the time he was 6 years old, he knew how to hold and shoot a gun proficiently, how to use the weapons on his dad’s belt, how to throw a decent punch. He did not, however, know basic skills most children had. He didn’t learn to talk until he was 4, and even throughout his childhood it took him awhile to figure out proper grammar. His people skills were practically nonexistent since the only people he talked to were his family. He couldn’t read or write (and still can’t to this day.)
He started going on missions with them instead of staying in the ship by the age of 12 and has been fighting by their side for the most part. He started getting into real trouble by 16, sneaking off the ship wherever they were docked, hanging out with people because he was desperate for communication. Though most people didn’t talk to him because he was so weird and didn’t seem to fit in anywhere. So he found solace in music, because the songs his dad showed him spoke to him much more than people ever could. He tried to understand though. He thought people were special. Important. All of them had good in them so he didn’t judge them too harshly. However, this naivety was what nearly got him killed on his last mission, and was how he got a young girl killed instead by accident. He spent time in jail for a few months and during that time completely blocked out what had happened, his mind too fragile to handle the guilt. His dad finally managed to break him out and decided to send him down to Earth. He knew it was too soon to take him back on missions, and he figured it was time for him to experience real life instead of what he’d been having.

Adjusting to Earth has been pretty difficult for Xander. He’s clueless about most things he discovers and gets overly excited when he learns even simple information that he finds cool, even if everyone else thinks it’s common knowledge. And even though he misses traveling around in space and is pissed at his dad for ditching him on a new and unfamiliar planet, he’s trying to get used to things. He’s trying to experience life like his dad told him, or at least… Trying his best. He’s a pretty awkward guy, and has a personality quite similar to a golden retriever. He’s excitable, friendly, open, and trusting. He’s a bit naive at times and can be manipulated and tricked pretty easily. He has a good heart and cares for others no matter what, unless they give him an unignorable reason to think otherwise. All in all though, he’s a sweetheart and a good friend, even if he’s a bit confused at all times.

While Xander may seem a bit clueless at times, he is actually incredibly smart but shows it in different ways than most. He is an adept inventor who specializes in mainly weapons and sometimes armor.
He is also incredibly skilled at hand to hand combat, and ranged weapons, which takes most by surprise considering how sweet he tends to act. But put him or his loved ones in danger, and a whole different side of him comes out, though his fighting style is mainly self defense and self-preservation and will only try to injure back if he really needs to.
